Downtown Living, Fit for King Cotton...

For many years in Memphis, as in many Southern cities along the Mississippi River, cotton was king. Cotton was the leading cash crop of the South, and Memphis was one of the leading cities in the processing, classing, sale, and shipping of cotton, with its easy access to the Mississippi River shipping venue. The multi-level buildings along Riverside Drive in downtown Memphis, overlooking the banks of the Mississippi, were once the hub of the busy cotton district. My maternal uncle started his career in this district, as a cotton classer, and later in his career was a cotton executive and farmer.

Many buildings, such as this one shown, have been restored and are now being used as restaurants, shops, offices, and as loft and condominium space. Downtown Memphis has a unique urban energy and is a fun choice for those wishing to live "at the heart of it all."

The Mighty Mississippi

This is the Mississippi River as viewed from Mud Island (Memphis, TN), facing South. You can see the "M Bridge" (M for Memphis) and a barge in the background, and driftwood in the foreground. We have quite a bit of driftwood deposited during Spring each year, as the thawing snow and ice to the north of us raise the river level.

When people think of my city, they think of . .

...Elvis! I know...this one was almost too easy for me this month. I guessed that Elvis might be the most thought-of when it comes to Memphis...after all, the memory of Elvis is still iconic. (The statue above is on the western end of Beale Street).

But, I decided to ask some online friends near and far, and also long-distance contacts through work, what or whom first came to mind when they thought of Memphis, and by far most said "Elvis". But, some also made mention of Beale Street, the Peabody ducks, blues music, and barbeque. When I think of Memphis the lush gardens, warm and friendly people, and wonderful restaurants and traditions come to mind.

McGinnis Oil Company and Service Station, Collierville

You've seen these types of places before...old, charming service or gas stations that have been preserved just as they were years ago. They are often now used as antique shops, or sometimes fun, quirky little diners. The thing I love about this one, located on the Collierville Town Square, is that it is still in use as a service station.

This building was built in 1927 by the McGinnis family as a service station, and also became the office for McGinnis Oil Co. (as a distributor for Sinclair Petroleum Products) in 1939. Every time I pass this building, or visit Collierville's town square, I am able to take a little trip back in time...at least for a little while.

Herb Parsons Lake

Since today was so clear and pretty and not too cold, my hubby and I visited one of our favorite picnic spots, Herb Parsons Lake, which is just outside Memphis and Collierville. It is a 177-acre public lake that is primarily for fishing (no skiing, sailing or swimming), although I have seen the occasional kayak in the water there, too. This is just the type of small lake that makes me want to get into a canoe and take a leisurely ride through the water, exploring all of the little inlets. It reminds me so much of fun summer days spent at Girl Scout camp, and the water was really that "sparkly" today. Picture-perfect!

The lake was named for Herb Parsons, who was an expert marksman and hunter, even spending time as a showman trapshooter and also as a gunnery instructor during WWII. My son found this very interesting, as we have been visiting this lake since he was tiny, and he is now an expert marksman (trap) himself.

Colorful Beale Street

This is one of the many colorful neon signs on famous Beale Street, which is especially festive and fun at night.

This is a little quick post...we have been without power quite a bit tonight, due to the unusually high winds (gusts over 50 mph) in the Memphis area today. I promised my son that I would post and then turn the computer over to him to finish a report for school. :)

Stonewalled...

Charming Farming, in the Middle of the City...

This photo above started out as an attempt to share with you a charming little estate and mini-farm in the middle of East Memphis (shown just below). My husband noticed that the horses were out, and thoughtfully pulled over so that I could take a photo or two (I'm lucky to have a fun and spontaneous hubby, who also knows a fun photo-op when he sees one!)

Every time I pass this little estate, I'm reminded of the charming photos I see posted by bloggers in the British Isles or Ireland. This area at one time was filled with estate-sized lots with beautiful houses and sometimes livestock, but most land in this section has been sold and developed into upscale hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and offices.

This family seems to be the lone holdout (good for them!), and I always enjoy riding past their property. Soon, I'll show you more photos of this land, complete with two old silos covered in wysteria, which is breathtaking in early Spring, and a lovely home. Absolutely dreamy.

As soon as I took the photo above, the tan-colored, smaller horse (Shetland?) took a keen interest in what I was doing. He immediately started toward me at a quick trot.

By this time, he is coming fast and hard (and he's not a small one), and through the still-open car door, I can hear my husband and son laughing loudly, wondering if I'm going to stand my ground and still take photos. (Of course I am...I'm not scared, after all, there's a chain-link fence between my new friend and me!).

He stops for a moment, perhaps to make sure I'm also friendly (he doesn't know me, either, does he?)...

...and then comes right up to the fence to see if I have anything yummy to offer him (sadly, I didn't). I'm laughing and at the same time wishing I had much faster-shutter speed!

Here, he's looking down to see if perhaps I've dropped something yummy instead...I must have been a huge disappointment as his newest friend!

I hope that you enjoyed meeting him, too....he really was a sweetie. I also hope that you are having a warm and fun-filled weekend!

It's Freezing!!...

I know that we Southerners are often thought to be a bit wimpy when it comes to the winter and cold weather...but this is cold! Even the poor iron griffins in this fountain are freezing! I love how they almost seem to be hiding in a little den in the midst of all that ice. I plan on doing the very same thing tonight, hiding in my den with a hot drink and a good book!

We took these photos this afternoon at Saddle Creek, a shopping center in the Germantown area. I also wanted to share the photos from a little distance, to show you just how eye-catching this "ice sculpture" is.

The most ironic thing is that the weather forecast here predicts that we will be near 60 degrees on Sunday.

Come on, Spring!...

Sculpture, Dixon Gallery & Gardens

As you can see, not everything is "traditional" at Dixon Gallery and Gardens. This is one of the outdoor sculptures that I discovered while walking the many paths at Dixon. I always enjoy modern or abstract art (especially when mixed in with the more traditional or classic) because it makes you think. The piece ends up being whatever you find while studying it...which is always interesting, and there is no right or wrong in how you interpret it.

Germantown Commissary

Dusty Lens mentioned in my comments section yesterday having a favorite food, which is "a pulled pork BBQ sandwich, with coleslaw on top, Memphis-style". That was music to my ears. We Memphians are kind of proud of our BBQ heritage...after all, BBQ is a food group unto itself, and in Memphis, BBQ means pork (not beef), and to those who know their stuff, that's pulled pork, not chopped. :)

There are some local restaurants which have made their name with the tourists, claiming to have the best pulled pork, best dry ribs (no sauce...a dry rub of spices only) or wet ribs (sauce-covered), etc. I won't dispute that they have some great offerings, which I will definitely share with you soon. But, to many of the locals (including our family), Germantown Commissary restaurant makes the best pulled pork BBQ in town. Before returning to college, my older son usually requests Commissary as his meal before he leaves for school. They also serve ribs, coleslaw (you can have that on your sandwich, or on the side), great baked beans, and homemade banana pudding and other sinfully yummy desserts. Their hot tamales topped with melted cheddar cheese (as an appetizer or a side item) are my personal favorites.

The Commissary building has been in this same spot, next to the railroad tracks and across from the old railroad station in the heart of Germantown (a suburb of Memphis) for over 90 years. It was originally a commissary...a kind of general store. When the present owners bought the commissary building to use as a restaurant in the early 80s, they decided that the name, Germantown Commissary, was perfect and should stay. As you can see from the photos above, they also retained the old small-town charm. The interior shot is only part of the restaurant; it is bigger than what is shown. I can't decide which I like more...the wonderful food, or the atmosphere, but both are can't-miss. Sun Studio

Sun Studio is the studio complex (just off Union Avenue near downtown Memphis) that is known the world over for being the recording studio that gave Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison their start.

Sun is considered a "must-see" by those interested in music history. It is popular with tourists from all over the world year-round, and in spring and summer you have to be extra careful driving by so that you don't hit the visitors stepping back into the street to get that perfect photo. It is especially busy during the annual "Elvis Week" in August, and it is a fun stop full of interesting history. If you visit, do allow yourself enough time to soak up the atmosphere and history at Sun Studio.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day & the National Civil Rights Museum

Today in the U.S. it is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, honoring the memory and work of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. A celebration service (shown above) was held this afternoon at the National Civil Rights Museum, which is located in downtown Memphis. The crowd continued on to the right of the photo, and the area around the museum was quite busy today.

The museum is a popular destination for area residents, school groups, and also tourists. The museum was built around the old Lorraine Motel (the site of Dr. King's assassination on April 4, 1968), and the wreath on the balcony is permanent, marking the spot where Dr. King was shot. Please click on photos to enlarge. I will take more detailed photos on a day with a bit less activity, but I thought you might enjoy seeing the celebration held there today.

South Lawn, Dixon Gallery & Gardens

This is the view of the bridge and statuary at the rear of the South Lawn at the Dixon (to the rear of the original house and museum). To give you an idea of just how large the entire rear lawn area is, the photo below was taken from the walkway just behind the house (in the same direction as the first photo), and the one below that was taken looking the other way, toward the rear of the house and museum. The statue shown is my favorite on the property. It was raining steadily when I took this photo; on my next visit I will take a more detailed photo of the statue itself.

The rear/South lawn is where the very popular Dixon outdoor concert series is held each spring and summer. Past entertainers have included Bruce Hornsby, Wynonna Judd, Michael McDonald, Al Jarreau, and Hootie and the Blowfish.

A Winter Weekend Giggle with Maggie...

It is SO cold here today that it made me want to post something to bring a wintertime smile to everyone's face (including mine :). This photo was taken last year, and is probably one of my favorites ever.

This is Maggie, the fur-baby of a dear friend. A visiting friend of theirs had a baby, and the baby dropped its pacifier. Maggie picked it up off the floor, and took an immediate liking to it, and has loved it ever since. This photo never fails to bring a smile to our faces, and I hope that it brightens the day for you, too!

The Gardens at the Dixon...

This is another view in the gardens of Dixon Gallery & Gardens, this time looking toward the Conservatory and Greenhouses.

Dixon has an extensive horticulture program and uses many native plants in the gardens. This is not only a "greener" and healthier approach to garden design as the plants easily accomodate and adapt to the local environment, but it also produces an interesting and historically-correct garden. The Dixon also has a wonderful, very popular plant sale each year, where you can obtain young specimens of the plants used in the gardens there.

Central Gardens Elegance....

The Central Gardens neighborhood in Midtown Memphis was developed in the early part of last century (1900-1929), and was "the" neighborhood of choice for the wealthy and up-and-coming in Memphis at that time. Streetcars took husbands to work and wives downtown to shop, and groceries, milk and other goods were delivered regularly to the residences there.

There was a strong sense of community in this area then, as there is even today. The neighborhood experienced a renewed interest in the 70s and 80s, and many homes have now been restored. Most homes in this neighborhood are original and you don't see the tear-downs (and then new construction) that you see in some areas today. It is one of our favorite areas to drive through and admire the beauty and craftsmanship of another time, and it is wonderful to see that it is still just as respected and loved today as it was when it was first developed.

Winter Garden

Memphis has some beautiful gardens, but there isn't much blooming here this time of year. The big "show" of Spring is only a few months away (Memphis is absolutely breathtaking in April), but the flowering cabbage and kale have been particularly colorful and lovely this winter. I found these at Dixon Gallery and Gardens.

Then & Now....The Peabody Hotel Continental Ballroom

I always love seeing "then and now" photos, especially when great care has been taken in the restoration of historic buildings. The top photo is the Continental Ballroom at the Peabody Hotel as it looked in 1925. Just below that photo is the Continental Ballroom as it looked when we visited just a few weeks ago.

I was so pleased at how much of the wonderful period detail remains, after all these years. The photo below shows a bit more of that glorious detail. The Peabody definitely never disappoints!

Brick Path, Dixon Gallery & Gardens

I apologize for being away this weekend; we had some unexpected obligations that kept me away from the computer. I missed visiting with all of you!

Jim tagged me for the New Year's Resolutions tag, so here goes. :) As explained on Chris' blog (she tagged Jim...is this getting hard to follow?), most people fall into one of four categories when it comes to New Year’s Resolutions: 1) quite serious about them, 2) flippant about them, 3) pressured to do them, or 4) do not do them. When it comes to resolutions, I seem to fall between #1 and #2...I'm not very, very serious about them, but I do like to take time to evaluate life in general, and change direction a bit if I feel the need.

The photo above is one of my favorite places, and representative of my main resolution this year...it is one of the extensive garden pathways at Dixon Gardens in Memphis. I find peace and quiet there, and walking the grounds and brick paths often gives me time to observe nature, and to think or just have quiet, undistracted time. This year, I hope to take a little more time to recharge when I need to, and also to live a bit more "in the moment."

I tend to be a "planner", and that can be a good thing, to a point. But, often the greatest joys can be found in the little things that we miss while planning our next step...the little things that can be found if we slow down enough to take in the view as we travel along life's path. I hope to be doing a bit more of that this year.

John Daly's Restaurant and Bar

One of our favorite casual eating places in the area is John Daly's (located just over the Memphis city limit line, in Mississippi). Yes, this restaurant and bar is owned by John Daly, the famous golfer who also lives in Memphis, and is every bit as spontaneous and fun as he is. Occasionally you will see him there, raising money for charity with his band (he golfs, and plays music, too!). The atmosphere is always perfect for having fun with family and friends, and the food---which ranges from burgers and appetizers to wonderful steaks---is consistently great. Dixon Gallery and Gardens

The Dixon is one of my favorite spots in Memphis, whether for the exquisite art in the gallery, or the lovely gardens and extensive winding pathways outside. Dixon has a permanent collection of paintings by French and American Impressionists, and also wonderful collections on loan, including the upcoming exhibit of the works of David Macaulay. They also have a very popular outdoor concert series on the expansive rear lawn each spring and summer.

Residence, Chickasaw Gardens

This is a residence in the Chickasaw Gardens neighborhood in Mid-Memphis, and is typical of that area. The neighborhood consists of several quiet, residential streets surrounding a small, pretty lake. A portion of the movie 21 Grams (Sean Penn, Naomi Watts) was filmed in this neighborhood.

"Keeping Watch" Angel, Front View

Joy asked what the angel posted yesterday looked like from the front, so I am sharing that view with you today. DH, my son and I found her to be comforting and peaceful. What feeling do you get when looking at her?

The Famous Peabody Ducks...

Here are two glimpses of the Peabody ducks in the original Lobby fountain.

A blogging friend recently asked me what happens to the ducks in the winter, and what type of life they have? The Peabody definitely caters to the ducks, as they not only spend time each day in the fountain, but also have hotel penthouse space of their own, including a pond and a heated area. We were told that the Peabody also owns a farm in Mississippi where the ducks live during their "off time" or after service. I believe that the ducks have a few months in the Peabody (one person told us three months), alternating which group of ducks are at the hotel.

The "Duck Parade" is famous and a huge attraction for visitors to the city. The ducks parade into the Lobby in the morning (11am the last time we visited...check with the hotel staff if you wish to visit) and parade out at about 5pm. The Lobby is always packed with people for this event (even the balcony area), so arrive early for a good spot. I once stood next to Bono of the group U2 during the duck parade, and he was as enthused about it as anyone.

Fence Post, Woodruff-Fontaine House

This is a detailed view of one of the fence posts in front of the Woodruff-Fontaine House, a French Victorian home in downtown Memphis. It was built in 1870 on what was then considered "Millionaire's Row", now called Victorian Village. This area is popular with tourists and those who love local history and is often the site for various festivals, and Woodruff-Fontaine is often the chosen site for parties and weddings.

My late mother was a longtime board member and docent/tourguide at the Wooodruff-Fontaine House, so it has a soft spot with all of us (I will definitely be sharing more photos in the future...it's quite pretty). The home is said to be haunted---many people have reported seeing Molly Fontaine sitting on the bed of one of the second story bedrooms, and people working in the house have reported seeing an imprint, as if someone has been sitting there, on the usually pristine bedcovers. Two psychics also reported seeing Elliott Fontaine on the third floor while my mother was leading tours. She was always a bit disappointed that she never witnessed any of this herself...she had a great love for all that is a bit mysterious, as well as history and preservation.

A Night on Beale Street...

This is a typical crowd on Beale Street on weekend nights, or any evening when there has been a downtown activity. Lots of people, lots of fun, and lots of energy...

Photo of the Year, 2007...and a Happy 2008 to You!!

I have been blogging with this community for only the past 10 days or so, so I chose my favorite personal photo from the past year.

It is my favorite because of the way it came about. I would admire some of the photos my online friends in Europe would post on their blogs, including the lovely sunflower fields that are found there. I sometimes would show my husband the photos, and we would discuss how we one day look forward to visiting abroad, perhaps after we've gotten our sons through college.

One day in late August, my husband picked me up from work, my camera in his hand. He said that he "had someplace great to show" me, and drove about 15 minutes outside of Memphis (quite a distance from work, and home). There we found huge sunflower fields, beautiful ones...breathtaking. He had brought me to this special place, just so that I could see the beauty of them, and take photos. It was spontaneous, and wonderful.

Now, I am new to photography, with no training and a fairly run-of-the-mill digital camera. The photos I took that day came out better than I ever could have hoped, making the day even more memorable.
