The "M" Bridge, Up Close & Personal

This is a more detailed view of the "M" bridge (M for Memphis :) that spans the Mississippi River, connecting Tennessee and Arkansas. Memphians also call it the "New Bridge", but its official name is the Hernando de Soto Bridge, as it was named after the Spanish explorer who explored this part of the Mississippi. You can read more about this bridge and its history here.

I took this photo at the base of the bridge on Mud Island. This is the same bridge that you first viewed, from a distance, here. I find its shape to be rather pleasing to the eye...

Memphis actually has two bridges spanning the Mississippi River. I will show you the other bridge, older than this one, very soon.

Definately pleasing to the eye! I think I might have crossed on the older bridge.

Living on the Mississippi is wonderful, isn't it? When I'm home in St. Paul I spend lots of time on the banks, walking the paths, esp in summer when it's surrounded by the greenery. Have you ever been to Itasca,MN, the source point of the Mississippi? It's fun because you can just jump across it. Imagine that!

i love the angle of this shot -- your other post from far away really shows how large it is... i've driven across this bridge several times too, but never stopped to enjoy it.. =)

Happy St. Valentine's day. This bridge looks fantastic. The M shaped superstructure makes it unique. As the others have said, you have taken this from a great, original angle. Nice work.

By the way, is Miss Daisy a lab? I love labs, my favorite dog. Although, currently we have a Wheaton Terrier

It looks like the top lip from this angle. I'll be driving over this bridge shortly.

Happy Valentine's Day to you, Southern Heart. Did you ever sing this one?

Five little Valentines were having a race.
The first one was all covered with lace.
The second one had a funny face.
The third one said, "I love you."
The fourth one said, " I do too."
The fifth one was sly as a fox,
He ran the fastest to your Valentine box.

Neat! Can't wait to see the other bridge.

I think it's interesting that the Mississippi River is named after my state considering only a small part of it actually runs through here!
